Inner city country garden

Over a number of years we worked closely with this client to incrementally transform the architectural appearance and performance of this dwelling, as well as turning the once overgrown gardens into aesthetically pleasing and usable spaces.

The board and batten/barn style of this home drove the ‘country farmhouse’ theme of the landscaping. Sprawling mature fruit trees were tamed to clear a space for the gravelled entertaining area, canopied by deciduous trees which were introduced to provide a dappled shade throughout summer before the retreating autumn foliage makes way for valuable winter sunshine. Colourful flowering plants such as bougainvillea, hydrangea and clivia were incorporated to give the garden an air of enchantment and secrecy.

A minimalist approach was taken with the street side of the property. Limiting the plant palette to dicksonia fibrosa, lomandra and ligularia lends a subtle accompaniment to the black barn-doors; a decorative façade, purpose built and installed onsite by Greenway Studio. A naturalised fernery is viewed through a large picture window as you descend the internal staircase.
